On the way to integration

Ute Kaiser

Language, residence, work: These were and still are important issues for refugees. They are main concern of the tünews INTERNATIONAL team as well, already since the first issue in December 2015. Back then, the changes and developments tünews would undergo up until the 150th issue were beyond prediction.

Language: A member of the tünews team passes the language exams for university entry. Residence: A member of the team along with their family finds an apartment in spite of the difficult situation on the housing market. Work: Several refugees have found apprenticeships or jobs and subsequently leave tünews. Providing refugees with useful qualifications for the job market is a stated goal of this newspaper project.

In retrospect: The news team right from the start wanted to address issues important to refugees, states editor Wolfgang Sannwald in 2015. They wanted to provide helpful tips. Colleagues shared their experiences in learning German, gave away their tips and tricks.

The tünews team researched many practical questions. How to buy a train ticket? How exactly does waste separation work? The results were published in the form of a short news-entry or a longer article – at first only in German and English, later on in Arabic and Persian/Dari as well. Concerning the right of residency or subsidiary protection: Already in the first year our team tackled more complicated issues. But tünews developed not only with respect to its contents. Its reach improved as well. Since April 2016 news-articles are also published on Facebook. Our team member Bright Igbinovia is delivering wall newspapers and magazines to refugee centres in the whole municipal district. People can ask questions and…..???

Our news-team is a sought-after partner in conversation, due to ever improving German skills. For instance, at a conference on the process of integration of women who fled their countries. A nonproblematic integration… She is the of the federal government and visited our … in August 2018 – a milestone for our team.

Language, housing, work: these were and are important topics for fugitives. They have also occupied the tünews INTERNATIONAL team since the first issue in December 2015, when it was impossible to predict how much would change before the current 150th issue was published.

Language: A tünews employee passes the German examination for the university. Living: An employee and her family find an apartment despite the difficult situation on the market. Work: Some fugitives have started an apprenticeship or a study and therefore said goodbye to tünews. Qualification for the job market is a goal of the newspaper project.

A look back: Right from the start, the editors wanted to write about topics that are important for fugitives, according to publisher Wolfgang Sannwald 2015. And they wanted to give helpful advice. Employees, for example, revealed tips and tricks for learning German that they had tried out themselves.

The tünews team researched many practical questions: How do you buy a train ticket? Or: How does waste separation work? The results resulted in reports or longer articles – in the beginning only in German and English, later also in Arabic and Dari. Whether changes in the right of residence or subsidiary protection: Already in the first year, the editorial staff devoted itself to more and more complicated topics.

Not only did tünews develop in terms of content, but also in terms of distribution. Since April 2016, the news has been available on Facebook. Since the beginning of 2017 Bright Igbinovia has been delivering wall newspapers and magazines to the large shelters for fugitives in the district. Questions from fugitives bring along editorial members of “tünews vor Ort” events in the county. Answers can be found in the newspaper.

Since September 2017, tünews has been inviting people to celebrate with the Epple House in Tübingen and the free radio station Wüste Welle. “4 All” is the name of the event developed by Claron Mazarello. In the magazine format “tüsounds INTERNATIONAL” he introduces the bands that play live at 4 All.

Currently about 20 fugitives work as minijobbers or bufdis at tünews – supported by a handful of coaches. In the special issue “Wählen hat wert!” fugitives recently reported on elections in their countries of origin.

The online editorial team is currently being strengthened. With Mostafa Elyasian there has been a trained photographer for some time. In March 2019, the District Office showed his photos of social hardship in Tehran that had been saved from censorship. A few months earlier, Ahmad Salah had opened the exhibition “Childhood between Ruins” there with pictures by Firas Abdullah on everyday life in the Syrian war. Shortly afterwards, the tünews-Wandzeitung and the magazine were given a new layout.

The editorial team is also in demand as an interlocutor thanks to their ever-improving knowledge of German. For example, at a conference on refugees on the way to integration. Annette Widmann-Mauz has easily integrated herself into the editorial conference of tünews. She is the Integration Commissioner of the Federal Government and was a guest of the tünews editorial team in August 2018 – a highlight for the team.
