Naturalization in Germany 8: Students

If you want German citizenship, you must meet several basic requirements. tünews INTERNATIONAL spoke to Matthias Regenbrecht on June 3rd, 2020. He is responsible for naturalizations in the district office in Tübingen. The interview was conducted by Fatima, among others, who works on the editorial staff of tünews INTERNATIONAL. She is still a student herself and asked about the subjects of minimum stay and language level: “Does the Realschule qualification also count as a language test?” Regenbrecht explained that her upcoming Realschule qualification would shorten the minimum stay before naturalization from 8 to 6 years. The shorter period also applies to the school leaving certificate. This is because the language level at school qualifications equate that of the Hauptschule with C1 certification and the lessons in history and community studies replace the integration course. However, the grades in both subjects and German should not be worse than a 4. The lower secondary school leaving certificate is equivalent to language level B1 and thus also replaces the normal language test. Regenbrecht also referred Fatima to a special regulation for children who can be naturalized together with their parents. If parents or one of the parents meet the stricter waiting periods of 8, 7 or 6 years and the other requirements, Regenbrecht can naturalize the spouse or their children after 4 years of residence.
