Paid time for education

To be successful at work, one should educate oneself further. Employees in Baden-Württemberg are generally entitled to educational time (educational leave). The employer continues to pay their wages or salaries during this time. The entitlement to educational leave only applies if the employees have been employed in a company for at least twelve months. You can take up to five days off every year, less if you work part-time. Apprentices or students at dual universities in Baden-Württemberg are entitled to five days of educational leave during their entire training or study period. Anyone wishing to continue their professional education must inform their employer eight weeks before the start of the course. The employer must decide on educational leave at least four weeks in advance. Employers can also refuse it if it would seriously affect the business or if it is an exceedingly small business with fewer than ten employees. The courses must be offered by a recognized educational institution – for example, an adult education center (i.e. the Volkshochschule) or the educational center of the German Federation of Trade Unions (the Bildungswerk des Deutschen Gewerkschaftsbunds).
