Current figures on training toleration

Currently, 8,000 people are completing their training in Germany with a training toleration, compared to only 3,600 in 2019. These figures from the Federal Ministry of the Interior were announced by the “Mediendienst Integration”. The vast majority of these trainees come from Afghanistan (around 2,000), as well as from Gambia, Iraq, Iran and Guinea. The increase, however, is at a very low level, as a total of more than 200,000 people with toleration live in Germany, among them almost 150,000 refugees with rejected asylum applications. With a training toleration, one can stay in Germany for the entire training period and two more years of employment and not be deported.

The increase is partly due to a new regulation from 2020: Since then, tolerated persons with shorter helper training in “shortage occupations” can also get a training toleration, for example as a nursing assistant. A spokeswoman for the network “Unternehmen integrieren Flüchtlinge” (Companies Integrate Refugees) emphasised to Mediendienst Integration that the demand from companies for trainees, even with toleration, has grown strongly. But there are still bureaucratic hurdles, she said, because many foreigners authorities only ever grant extensions of toleration for six months and not for the entire training period. The network “Companies Integrate Refugees” brings together 2770 companies.
