More rights for customers with internet contracts

The amended law for internet, telephone and mobile phone contracts has been in effect since December 1, 2021.

These rules also apply to older contracts and the most important rules are:

  • The phone provider must summarize the contracts in writing before a contract is signed. If a contract was concluded on the phone without this summary, it does not apply until customers have approved the summary.
  • Contracts can continue for a period of 24 months. If the contract is automatically extended, customers can cancel it within one month.
  • If the provider does not adhere to the terms of the contract, such as internet speed, the customer can terminate the contract without notice.
  • If the customer moves out of their home and this service is not available in the new apartment, they can terminate the contract within one month.
  • The customer must be informed in the event of malfunctions and defects. If the telephone and internet connection fail completely, users are entitled to a reduction in monthly fees from the third day.
  • If the provider changes, the new provider can take over the old number. The new provider must organize the transfer of numbers in good time. If he fails to do that in time, he must pay compensation from the second working day after the agreed takeover date.
  • The provider must provide detailed information about third-party services (apps or games, for example) on the bills.
  • The provider must inform their customers about the current optimal rate once a year – not only on the phone.
  • When connecting a house to a fiber optic network for the first time, the landlord can pass on costs to the tenant, if such an allocation is agreed in the rental agreement.
  • Customers with an e-mail account must also have access to their e-mails after the end of the contract. The Federal Network Agency has yet to determine how long exactly.
  • The provider can block the service in the event of an unpaid bill of more than 100 euros. He must inform the customer in writing two weeks in advance.
