Aid needs in Ukraine

Russia is waging a war of aggression against Ukraine and is deliberately destroying its infrastructure. On 15 November 2022 alone, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence reported nearly 100 missile attacks. Refugees from Ukraine often phone relatives and friends daily and report on their tense situation. At present, the electricity supply is particularly critical. It is completely unreliable. On some days there is only electricity for five hours, often only for one hour. When there is no electricity, the central heating in larger houses fails. And even if it comes on for an hour, it is not enough to heat the flat. Ukrainian refugees try to help their relatives who have stayed at home. However, they often have no money to do so. What the job centre or the social welfare office give them is meagre. And even if they could, they are not allowed to pass on the money. They need it to be able to live here. But those who work transfer money to people they know and learn from them that it arrives. Many refugees try to send warm clothes to Ukraine from Germany, and there is also a demand for power banks so that phones can continue to work even during power cuts. And they send LED lamps that can be operated on power banks. Power generators would be even better, but their price in Ukraine has tripled. Sending relief supplies to Ukraine is also expensive; a 20-kilogram shipment costs €100 with some providers. There are currently more than one million people living in Germany with personal connections and direct bank contacts to Ukraine. Their greatest wish is cash that they can send to their relatives.
