A good start in the new country

Refugees from Ukraine are mostly highly qualified. 17 percent are already employed.
Many of the more than one million war refugees from Ukraine have already settled in quite well in Germany—or are on their way to doing so. This is the result of the study “Refugees from Ukraine in Germany”. The research unit of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) and three other institutions surveyed 11,000 people for the study. According to the study, 17 percent of the refugees are already employed, half are attending a language course and 60 percent live in their own apartment. Most bring with them good prerequisites for gaining a foothold here.
Key findings:
– among adults, about 70 percent are women and 30 percent are men. Around 34 percent of the refugees from Ukraine are children and young people under 18,
– the level of education of the refugees is higher than that in the Ukrainian population. 72 percent have university degrees, compared to only 50 percent in Ukraine,
– 71 percent of employed Ukrainians have qualified or highly qualified jobs in Germany, 80 percent of the refugees have no or poor knowledge of German. 51 percent attend or have attended a German course, 36 percent participated in an integration course,
– 22 percent of children under the age of three and almost 60 percent of children of kindergarten age have a place in a daycare center,
– in nine out of ten families with school-age children, at least one child attends school. Almost a quarter of the families also use the online classes offered by the Ukrainian school,
– almost half of the refugees have regular contact with Germans,
– three out of four respondents felt welcome in Germany. 34 percent want to return after the war ends, 26 percent want to stay forever and 13 percent want to stay for at least several years. 27 percent do not yet want to commit themselves.
