A brake on energy prices

The enormous increase in energy costs is a heavy burden. That is why the Bundestag and Bundesrat have passed a law: The price brakes for gas, district heating and electricity have been in force since March 1. They also apply retroactively for January and February of this year and for the time being until the end of 2023. This means for customers of the energy suppliers: 80 percent of their electricity consumption forecast in September 2022 they will receive at a price of 40 cents per kilowatt hour. 80 percent of the forecast gas consumption will be capped at 12 cents per kilowatt hour, and for district heating at 9.5 cents. The 80 percent cap is intended to ensure that consumers save energy.
According to the law, energy suppliers must inform their customers—about the household’s basic consumption, their prices, the credits for January to March and the new deductions from April. But quite a few companies have already announced that they will not be able to meet this requirement by March 1.
Those who do not have a direct contract with an energy supplier must be informed by their landlord. Tenants are then supposed to get the relief back with the heating bill at the latest. In extreme cases, however, this can take until the end of next year.
The consumer advice center advises customers with direct contracts to check the information from the energy suppliers carefully, to adjust their transfers or to check the deducted payments.
