Ticks can make you sick

In Baden-Württemberg, there is a high risk of becoming infected with the brain infection TBE. This writes the Robert Koch Institute in a statement. This disease is transmitted by ticks. Ticks sit, for example, on blades of grass or in low bushes. They become active in early summer. Closed clothing can protect against them. It also helps not to walk through meadows or undergrowth, but to stay on paved paths. Experts recommend that people who spend a lot of time in their own backyards or in the countryside get vaccinated before the tick season, which runs from April to October. Almost all of those who contracted TBE in 2022 were not sufficiently vaccinated, writes the Robert Koch Institute. The ticks transmit the viruses already when sucking. Therefore, the animals should be removed immediately and the wound should be disinfected. The removal goes with tweezers or a special instrument. The tick should be caught near the surface of the skin and slowly pulled straight out.
