Islamic Studies: Many work at schools

Most graduates of Islamic theological studies at German universities work as teachers or in social work. This is the result of a study by the Academy for Islam in Science and Society (AIWG). It was conducted at Goethe University in Frankfurt in cooperation with the universities of Gießen and Mainz. “After graduation, about 44 percent of the graduates went into the educational field, about 26 percent into social work and about 15 percent into academia. Only about 13 percent are active in community work and about seven percent in pastoral care,” the Mediendienst Integration quotes the result of the study. Around 200 graduates took part in the survey.
Since 2011, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has been funding a total of seven locations for Islamic theological studies and religious education at German universities. Currently, there are about 2,500 students in Islamic theology. They are enrolled in bachelor’s, master’s and teacher training programs in Hamburg, Berlin, Münster, Frankfurt am Main, Nuremberg, Paderborn and Tübingen. The students are trained as teachers for Islamic religious education, social workers and theologians for work in mosques and Islamic organizations. The study also shows that student teachers in particular are satisfied with their training: Two-thirds would study the subject again; among graduates with a theological focus, this is the case for only less than half.
There are currently 183 students at the Center for Islamic Theology at the University of Tübingen (ZITh). Two-thirds of them are women, says Dr. Abdelaali El Maghraoui, the academic coordinator at ZITh. Tübingen has two bachelor’s and two master’s degree programs. El Maghaoui confirms the trend across Germany. Tübingen graduates also work mostly in schools, he says. But social work and community work are also important career fields.
