Blood donations can save lives

After accidents or during operations, seriously injured or sick people need blood donations. Around 15,000 blood donations are needed every day in Germany, writes the German Red Cross (DRK). They save lives.
How does a blood donation work? Before donating, you have to register. Those wishing to donate must bring a valid ID with them. They should be at least 18 and no more than 65 years old. After that, important health data such as body temperature, blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin level in the blood are determined. Those willing to donate then fill out a questionnaire about their health history. All of the data is discussed with a health care professional. They decide whether someone can donate.
How does a blood donation work? Those willing to donate lie on a bed. Medical personnel take about 500 milliliters of blood. This takes about ten minutes. After that, donors should rest for about ten minutes. Then they are given something to eat and drink. Medical personnel are present in case someone is not feeling well.
Is there money for donating blood? All Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies worldwide do not pay anything for blood donations. Blood should not be donated for financial reasons. And: all patients should be able to receive donated blood regardless of their financial situations.
Where can blood be donated? Blood donations in Tübingen are collected at the ZKT Tübingen. This joint venture of the DRK Blood Donation Service and the University Hospital is located on the hospital grounds (Ottfried-Müller-Strasse 4/1). It is open on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., only on Tuesdays from 2 p.m. onwards. In other communities in the district, there are on-site appointments in gymnasiums and festival halls.
