More and more foreign professional qualifications are being recognized in Germany. This is according to an analysis by Mediendienst Integration. In 2022, a total of 54,300 applications were approved in full or in part—eleven percent more than in the previous year. The majority of recognitions were for documents from EU countries (11,800), followed by other European countries (10,900). The number of recognized qualifications from Syria (3,100) ranks behind Turkey (3,600). According to Mediendienst Integration, the number of applications almost doubled between 2019 and 2022. The data was collected by the Federal Statistical Office.
Three out of four applications come from people who want to work in the healthcare sector. Applications in the fields of mechatronics, energy and electrical engineering are much rarer. This is due to the fact that not all professional fields in Germany require a license. However, this is a prerequisite for working as a doctor or teacher. There is a federal recognition law for this, which also applies to nurses, for example. For other professions – such as nursery teachers – there are state regulations. However, in retail and many other professions, you can apply directly to the company.
It is often very time-consuming, especially for refugees, to have qualifications from their former home country recognized. The IQ network “Integration through Qualification” provides assistance through its advice centers:

There you can also find out which regulations apply to individual professions, how much recognition costs and how long the process takes.
