Minister: Language courses for refugees do not reflect reality

During her editorial visit to tuenews INTERNATIONAL on July 31, Marion Gentges (CDU), Baden-Württemberg’s Minister of Justice and Migration, deplored the inadequate funding for integration and language courses, which is threatened by further cuts (see our report Minister Gentges impressed by tuenews INTERNATIONAL | tuenews (tunewsinternational.com) ).
Based on her own observations, she also criticized the practical suitability of the courses and the compulsory language tests. She asked the tuenews INTERNATIONAL editors present about their experiences of learning German. They confirmed the minister’s criticism. The courses do not teach you enough about what you really need to use the language: „You can’t speak in everyday life the way you learn to speak on a course.“ Marion Gentges added: „The textbooks actually miss the reality of life!“ This is also due to the fact that they are often designed for foreign students who want to study in Germany and not for migrants.
Another problem became apparent in the lively discussion: High German is taught and learned in the language courses, but people in Württemberg, especially in rural areas, actually speak mainly Swabian. „This has its very own word meanings, grammar and pronunciation,“ said the minister, making it more difficult for refugees to successfully integrate into the language.
