The threat of forced marriage: help for young women

Every year, young migrant women who travel to their country of origin with their parents are married off against their will. The women’s rights organization Terre des Femmes points this out. This is forbidden in Germany, however, because you are only allowed to marry when you are 18 years old and therefore of legal age. Forced marriages are criminal offenses. A non-representative survey conducted by Terre des Femmes in German schools in 2022 revealed that teachers had learned of 1847 cases of threatened and actual forced marriages.
Girls and young women who now fear that their family will use their vacation in Turkey to force them into marriage, for example, can find help in many places in Germany. First of all, they can approach teachers or school social workers. Girlfriends are also a first port of call. There are also a number of counseling centers. These can also be contacted by friends who want to prevent a forced marriage. An overview of nearby advice centers can be found on the Terre des Femmes website:

The help hotline of the Ministry for Family and Civil Society Affairs can be reached anonymously and free of charge on 116 016. Advice is also available in German via chat or email. The telephone helpline is available 365 days a year and help is available in 18 languages:
