Language problems when visiting the doctor

Doctors need to understand their patients in order to make the right diagnosis. During the conversation, they can find out where something hurts or what other complaints the patient has. If patients do not speak enough German, they may not understand how to take their medication. Interpreters from the patient‘s own family, volunteers, but also translation programs on cell phones could ensure better communication. This is what Ute Leidig, State Secretary in the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Social Affairs, Health and Integration, said during a visit to the tuenews editorial team.
Leidig also addressed another problem. Many refugees from other cultural backgrounds do not understand the German healthcare system. Instead of visiting the GP practice as their first port of call, they go straight to the emergency room. According to Leidig, the ministry is working on a concept for this issue. The aim is to ensure that newly arrived refugees understand the German healthcare system. The ministry is also supporting organizations that want to implement a special programme for the qualification of language mediators in the healthcare sector.
The State Secretary described the Triaphon software tool as another “currently important step“ towards better communication in doctors‘ surgeries. This medical interpreter hotline is available around the clock, every day of the week, for clinics and doctors‘ surgeries that book this service.
