Respiratory diseases at record level

In the first eight months of 2024, there were already more working AOK policyholders on sick leave than in the whole of last year. From January to August 2024, there were 219 sickness-related absences per 100 insured persons in Baden-Württemberg alone – more than in the whole of 2023 with 217 cases. This was reported by AOK Baden-Württemberg. The state‘s health insurance provider assumes that the figures will be significantly higher this year than in 2023 after the autumn and winter. 77 cases per 100 working members are a “major driver“ of this trend, with respiratory illnesses accounting for 77 cases per 100 working members. The AOK-Bundesverband expects a new record figure for the current year. It does not believe that telephone sick notes are being abused, as suggested by Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner, among others. On the contrary: reporting sick by telephone could relieve the burden on doctors‘ surgeries and prevent contact with sick people.
As with coronavirus, hygiene also plays a major role with other viruses. Because colds, flu or coronavirus, for example, are also transmitted via the hands, thorough (20 to 30 seconds) and regular hand washing (back of the hand, fingers and the areas in between) with soap and water can prevent germs from entering your own body or being passed on to other people. If you also wear masks, you can protect yourself and others from cough, cold and coronavirus pathogens.
