Hamza (14) injured his foot playing soccer. What do his parents have to do if he can’t go to school?
Parents of underage pupils are obliged to inform the school on the second day at the latest that their child cannot come to school. They must state the reason – for example illness – and the expected duration. You can do this verbally, by telephone or in writing. But it is not enough just to inform them verbally. Parents/guardians must also inform the school in writing within three days.
A doctor’s certificate may be requested in the event of prolonged illness. Head teachers can also request that parents submit a medical certificate from a public health officer.
Do schools have to inform parents/guardians if their child does not come to school? There are no uniform school regulations on this in Baden-Württemberg, according to the Tübingen State Education Authority when asked by tuenews INTERNATIONAL. The education authority advises parents who wish to be informed to contact the school directly with their concerns. Parents could also raise the issue at a parents’ evening.
