Syrian refugees: all pending asylum procedures stopped

All asylum applications from Syrians that have not yet been decided will be suspended in Germany. This was confirmed by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) at the request of tuenews INTERNATIONAL. The news magazine “Spiegel” had initially reported on this. However, refugees from Syria who have already received a decision on their application have nothing to fear from this at the moment, it continues. The regulation applies to all applications for which the situation in Syria is decisive, according to the news agency dpa. The so-called Dublin procedures, in which another EU country is responsible for the asylum procedure, are not affected.
BAMF spokeswoman Lioba Hebauer told tuenews about the decision: The situation in Syria is “extremely dynamic, confusing and difficult to assess” following the fall of the Assad regime. The BAMF is continuously monitoring the situation on the ground and “involving all relevant sources”. However, based on the current situation and the unforeseeable developments, it is currently not possible to make a final decision on the outcome of an asylum procedure,” the spokesperson continued. For this reason, the BAMF has provisionally postponed decisions on applicants from Syria where the situation in Syria is important. “If the situation stabilizes in a way that can be assessed, the BAMF will consider adjusting its decision-making practice and then resume its decision-making activities in full,“ the authority stated.
According to “Spiegel” the asylum applications of 47,270 Syrian refugees are affected, including 46,000 initial applications. From January to November 2024, 74971 refugees from Syria applied for asylum in Germany, 74,420 of which were first-time applications. Syria was therefore by far the country from which the most applicants came to Germany. According to the Federal Statistical Office, just under one million people with Syrian citizenship were living in Germany at the end of last year. In most cases, Syrians were not granted asylum but what is known as subsidiary protection status. This is based on the fact that the person concerned is at risk of torture, a death sentence or other inhumane treatment in their country of origin. Despite this, a discussion has already begun in Germany about the return of Syrian refugees. A politician from the CDU has called for financial aid for people who wish to return to Syria. The FDP, among others, also called for an international Syria conference. Politicians from the SPD and the Greens, on the other hand, warned against premature debates.
