Child marriage is forbidden in Germany

Children are not allowed to marry in Germany. Since July 2017 there is a new law which says that both the people that want to get married must be at least 18 years old. This is meant to protect children younger than 18 years from early marriage. When married refugees come to Germany and are under 18 years old, their marriage is annulled by a judicial decision. If one of the persons in the marriage is under 16, their marriage is automatically invalid. In general: a marriage must be concluded at the civil registry office. Only then is it valid in Germany and only after that you can also get married in the church or in front of an Imam.
