Naturalization in Germany 2: Minimum stay required

If you want German citizenship, you must meet several basic requirements. One of the requirements is the time that naturalization applicants need to have lived in Germany. Matthias Regenbrecht, who is responsible for naturalization at the Tübingen district office, mentioned four different periods of stay in conversation with tünews INTERNATIONAL. The naturalization law initially uses a residence period of 8 years. Anyone who stays in Germany “legally and continuously” for so long is entitled to naturalization. Then Regenbrecht checks whether the person fulfills the other basic requirements. In some cases, the law places naturalization at the discretion of the naturalization authority. Regenbrecht may, for example, naturalize people a year earlier who have successfully completed an integration course with a test lasting several months. Anyone who has then improved their language level to B2 or C1 can even naturalize after six years of residence. With Matthias Regenbrecht, he can even naturalize refugees after only three years. He can also do this for people who married a German at least two years ago.
