New traffic rules to provide more safety for cyclists

On April 28th, the Federal Ministry of Transport announced new traffic regulations. Some of the newly enforced regulations serve the safety of cyclists. For example, motor vehicles must now maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 meters in towns and 2 meters out of town when overtaking pedestrians and cyclists. Vehicles over 3.5 tons are only allowed to drive at walking speed (4–7 km / h) when turning right – also to protect cyclists. Protective strips for cycling, which are marked by a dashed white line, now apply as an absolute stopping prohibition for cars. Persons may only be accompanied on bicycles if the bicycle is equipped for passenger transport and is ridden by a person who is at least 16 years old. The so-called “speed camera apps” that warn of speed controls on smartphones or in navigation systems are now prohibited. And finally, there is a new traffic sign that indicates the ban on overtaking single-track vehicles.
