In 2019, 142,509 people in Germany submitted a cross-border asylum application. That is about 20,000 fewer than in the previous year. The largest group by far comes from Syria, with 26,435 applicants, followed by asylum seekers from Iraq (10,894) and from Turkey (10,275). 7,778 people from Iran have applied, 7,124 from Afghanistan, 6,201 from Nigeria and 3,138 from Georgia. Furthermore, 2,630 people from unknown backgrounds have applied for asylum, 2,535 from the Russian Federation and 2,247 from Somalia.
