The hand kiss is a nice social gesture that can show respect and admiration, as well as loyalty. In some cases, however, it is also seen as a sign of humiliation and slavery. When women kiss men’s hands, which in the past has been used by nobles in particular, it expresses the respect and appreciation of women. Nowadays the man is more likely to kiss the woman’s hand, often as an expression of love and veneration. In Arabic countries, Turkey, Indonesia and Brunei and the Philippines, the hand kiss is often used towards older people, especially relatives such as parents and grandparents, as well as teachers or religious scholars.
