Easter in Germany

Easter is the most sacred festival in Christianity. It is closely connected with Christmas, which however has more significance for most Germans and on which there are more presents. On Christmas Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. On Easter they celebrate his sacrificial death and resurrection. Easter Sunday is preceded by a 40-day fasting period in which believers reflect on God. The holiday is on a different date every year: always on the Sunday after the first full moon of spring, in March or April.

In the week before Easter, called the Holy Week, many events take place: On Holy Thursday, Christians commemorate Christ’s Last Supper with his disciples. On Good Friday they mourn the death of Jesus on the cross. According to the Gospel, Jesus thereby settles the sins of all believers before God. On Easter Sunday they celebrate the resurrection of Christ on the third day and his victory over death.

There are many customs and symbols associated with Easter. Thus believers light the Easter fire in the night from Saturday to Easter Sunday and carry it into the dark church: The light stands for Jesus who conquered darkness and death. In Germany many families dye hard-boiled eggs and hide them for their children together with sweets and presents in Easter nests. Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are public holidays in Germany.
