Grants for start-ups

Refugees who are registered with the employment office may also be able to receive financial support from the employment agency if they want to start their own business. However, whether and which subsidies are possible through the employment agency can only be clarified in concrete individual cases in a discussion with the responsible mediator. They will also explain which requirements applicants must meet in order to have a chance of receiving funding.
The first decisive factor is whether a potential company founder is receiving unemployment benefits or if he or she is receiving a citizen’s allowance.
The job center is responsible for recipients of Bürgergeld, the former ALG II. In this case, it is possible to receive an “introductory allowance”.

The grant amounts to a maximum of 5000 euros and is paid for a maximum of two years. The prerequisite is that the project is expected to bring in enough money to become independent of the citizen’s allowance or at least to reduce dependence. In addition, there are other funding opportunities if the project is already up and running. The employment agency can also support the business start-up with loans or grants – for example, to rent premises or purchase computers.

Anyone who was previously employed and is now receiving unemployment benefits can apply to the employment agency for a start-up grant to start their own business. To do so, you must prove that your business idea is economically viable and that you yourself have the appropriate knowledge and prerequisites for self-employment. In addition, the entitlement to unemployment benefits must still exist for 150 days. Then the previous unemployment benefit is increased by a fixed amount for half a year. A low subsidy is granted for a further nine months. There is no legal entitlement to a start-up subsidy for a business start-up.
