Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa. The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) in Abuja is leading the struggle against the Corona virus. The government of Nigeria has drawn consequences from the crisis of Ebola from 2014 and has improved their health care. The first confirmed case of the pandemic of “Coronavirus disease 2019” (Covid-19) in Nigeria was announced on the 27th February 2020. The total confirmed cases: 6175 infected, 1644 survivors and 191 deaths (18.05.2020, source: Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC)).
The Nigerian government announced a ban on international flights on the 20th of March and all public events and social gathering are prohibited as well. Market centers, schools and religious institutions are also restricted from their activities. Security agencies are deployed to coordinate public affairs and some non-governmental organizations are helping people by distributing free hand sanitizers. Furthermore, the government is continuously announcing on radios and television stations the importance of regularly washing hands and the need to respect social distance. Major Problems arising due to the pandemic are insufficient medical facilities, price increases for consumable good based on shortage in supply and the elevation of hunger rate.
