How income from abroad is taxed

Refugees from Ukraine who live in Germany for more than six months and continue to work for a Ukrainian company from their home office must pay taxes in Germany. This is confirmed by the Ministry of Finance of Baden-Württembrg at the request of tünews INTERNATIONAL. Specifically, after 183 days they reach the status of tax residents and must pay taxes on all their income. Such an employee must then file an income tax return with the tax office of the city in which they reside. The deadline refers to the calendar year or a period of 12 months. Before that, taxes must be paid in Ukraine.
The background to this is the double taxation agreement between Germany and Ukraine, which has existed since 1997. It is intended to prevent employees from having to pay taxes in two countries for the same work. Similar rules exist for around 200 other states.
