Temporary protection for Ukrainians in Germany extended

The residence permit for refugees from Ukraine will be automatically extended until 4 March 2025, according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The prerequisite for this is that the current individual residence permit is still valid on 1 February of next year. Refugees from Ukraine therefore do not have to apply for an extension of their protection status.  The regulation is called the Ukraine Residence Permit Continued Validity Regulation.
The EU interior ministers had already laid down the basic principles in October. The so-called mass influx directive applies to refugees from Ukraine in Europe. War refugees are granted a humanitarian right to stay without having to apply for asylum. In Germany, this is governed by Section 24 (1) of the Act on the Residence of Foreigners.
