Artists from Tübingen and the Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk formed friendships 27 years ago during exhibitions and theatre projects. Now the two cities are officially partners. Tübingen’s Lord Mayor Boris Palmer and Vitalii Maletskyi, Mayor of Kremenchuk, signed the agreement. It will initially be valid until five years after the end of the Russian war of aggression, according to the city of Tübingen on its website. A delegation from the Ukrainian industrial city travelled to the signing of the agreement.
Kremenchuk has around 215,000 inhabitants, more than twice as many as Tübingen. The city is located around 300 kilometres south-east of Kiev and around 260 kilometres from the front. The infrastructure is regularly the target of attacks, reported Maletskyi. Many Ukrainian refugees live in the city.
The connection between the two cities is a solidarity partnership. This was decided by the Tübingen municipal council in the summer of 2023. Tübingen primarily wants to help Kremenchuk with reconstruction—with another fire engine and other items worth around 120,000 euros. Stadtwerke and the Lindenhof theatre are also currently supporting the city with a van and a cash donation.
