Journalists in Exile Report on Afghanistan

Since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan, the situation of the press has deteriorated dramatically. Afghan journalists informed about this at an event of “Reporters without Borders” in Berlin on May 3, the day of press freedom. Restrictions mainly affect female journalists. Many women lost their jobs in the media – except so far at the TV station “Tolo News”. With the return of the Taliban, all democratic gains have been eliminated, said journalist Abdul Haq Omeri. The Taliban also tried to put more restrictions on the work of foreign media. Refugee Afghan journalists now report from exile about their home country – for example on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. German media also currently provided information about protests by women against the new burqa requirement. “Women live dangerously when they want to speak their mind”: this is how a spokesman for Human Rights Watch assessed the Afghan women’s demonstrations in the news program “Tagesschau”.
