Conflicts in countries such as Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Myanmar, Nigeria, Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ukraine are causing numbers to rise. More than 100 million refugees represent more than one percent of the world’s population. The figure includes refugees and asylum seekers, but also the approximately 53.2 million people who have been displaced within their states. “To reverse the trend, there is only one answer: peace and stability, so that innocent people are not forced to choose between acute danger in their own countries or dangerous flight and exile,” Grandi said.
