Baden-Württemberg registered more refugees again in 2021. 18,356 arrived at the state’s initial reception facilities. In the first Corona year 2020, there were a total of 8,025 asylum seekers. These figures were announced by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Justice. For comparison: In 2015, when particularly large numbers of people fled Syria, Baden-Württemberg recorded more than 185,000 asylum seekers.
According to certain quota rules, other federal states took in just under 2,900 asylum seekers. 15,470 refugees remained in Baden-Württemberg in 2021. Of them, 14,442 applied for asylum for the first time, 1028 made a follow-up asylum application.
In the second half of 2021, the number of arrivals at the reception centres increased significantly again: to 10,465 people, more than twice as many as in the first half of the year (5,005 people). Justice Minister Marion Gentges (CDU) explained this with the events in Belarus and Afghanistan. Recently, about 50 people per day arrived at the reception centres. There are fewer places there because of the Corona pandemic – for example, due to the distance rules.
The ministry also informed about the origin of those who submitted initial applications: 4628 came from Syria, 1780 from Iraq, 1758 from Afghanistan and 1451 from Turkey. New in 5th place is Northern Macedonia. 891 people from this country sought asylum in Baden-Württemberg in 2021.
Baden-Württemberg is in line with the trend throughout Germany. According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, 190,816 people applied for asylum in Germany in 2021 – 148,233 of them for the first time. In 2020, there were around 69,000 fewer applicants nationwide. Most of the new arrivals came from Syria (54,903), followed by people from Afghanistan (23,276) and Iraq (15,604).
