Of the more than one million refugees from Ukraine, a large number have found accommodation in Baden-Württemberg. 131,000 Ukrainians are living in the southwest, which puts the state in third place behind North Rhine-Westphalia (219,000) and Bavaria (149,000). This is reported by Mediendienst Integration and is based on figures from the Central Register of Foreigners. However, these are estimates, as it is unclear how many refugees have already returned to Ukraine.
Far fewer refugees were accepted in the eastern states than in the south and west. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is in last place with 21,673 people. Few people also found refuge in Thuringia (26,610).
A large proportion of the refugees have found accommodation with relatives, acquaintances or voluntary supporters. Those who need accommodation and are dependent on state benefits are distributed among the federal states by the authorities according to a predefined key.
