How to find an apartment

It is difficult to find an apartment in Tübingen and the surrounding area because many people work or study in the city and therefore want to live here. That’s why the apartments are also expensive. It is somewhat easier in the communities around Tübingen.
Many apartments are offered in daily newspapers in Germany. In Tübingen (also Rottenburg and Mössingen) this is the Schwäbische Tagblatt, in Reutlingen (also Kirchentellinsfurt, Kusterdingen and Gomaringen) the Reutlinger General-Anzeiger. Especially on Saturday and Wednesday you can find offers there under the heading “Rentals”.
With Ebay classified advertisements (https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-wohnung-mieten/c203) one can search free of charge. Further possibilities are real estate portals. There one must pay attention however exactly to it, which fees are required.

There are also some pitfalls when looking for an apartment. Among other things, the Federal Association of Consumer Advice Centers warns against applying for a Schufa report via Immoscout24 for a fee before viewing an apartment. This provides information about a person’s creditworthiness—for example, about how many credit cards someone uses and whether he or she pays back loans on time. However, it is only permissible to request the information when a contract is concluded, the “Tagesschau” quotes the consumer center. In addition, the Schufa information is also available free of charge.
Fraudsters use the housing shortage to cheat people out of their money. How to protect yourself from “fake” offers can be found, among other things, on the homepage of the consumer advice center:

Who gets money from the job center, because he has no work, must consider with the housing search that the job center takes over rent costs only up to a certain height. Anyone who rents an expensive apartment would then have to pay the difference themselves. For a single person, the apartment may not exceed 45 square meters. The cold rent may cost a maximum of 510 euros in the city of Tübingen. In the surrounding area (420 euros) and in the Rottenburg-Steinlach area (415 euros), the amounts are somewhat lower:

The website also provides further advice on what to consider before signing a rental agreement. For example, the job center must approve a move if the authority is to cover relocation costs.
Anyone who has received an invitation to view an apartment must ask the landlord what documents he or she should bring. It is also important to find out what additional costs will be incurred each month—for heating or hot water, for example. Leases are sometimes signed for a specific period of time, but sometimes they are for an indefinite period. A deposit often has to be paid when a lease is signed. This can amount to up to three months’ rent. Further information—also in Ukrainian—is available from the consumer advice center.
