Forgotten your ticket? That costs money!

The monthly ticket is lying on the dresser at home, but the ticket inspector on the bus wants to see it straight away. Or the electronic ticket is saved on your mobile phone—but the battery is flat and the ticket cannot be shown. What happens now? “Regardless of whether our customers have forgotten their paper ticket or chip card or are unable to show their mobile phone ticket due to a flat battery, the passenger will always be issued a ticket at the increased fare of 60 euros in these cases. However, if the passenger can prove that they had a personal ticket (D-Ticket without naldo-Plus, D-Ticket JugendBW, Semesterticket or similar) at the time of the check, this fare will be reduced to 7 euros,” says a spokeswoman for the Naldo transport association when asked by Tunews International.
The prerequisite is that the customer actually presents the ticket to the company that issued the ticket. This can be done in person or by email. “In general, our customers should always check whether they have a valid ticket before they start their journey,” says the spokesperson. A “contract overview” is also expected to appear from next January, showing customers in which months they have used a particular ticket.
Anyone travelling long-distance with Deutsche Bahn will pay double the fare, but at least 60 euros, if they are caught travelling without a ticket. This is considered fare evasion. Fare dodging is still a criminal offence. Anyone who is unable to pay the fine may even have to go to prison.
