Get a new health insurance card quickly

Anyone who has lost their health insurance card—the electronic health card eGK—must apply for a new one from their health insurance company. This also applies if the card has been stolen. In both cases, the secret code must also be blocked if the card was equipped with it. If you have to see a doctor while waiting for the new card, the health insurance company with which you are insured will issue a replacement certificate. Replacements usually arrive quickly. “The necessary passport photo is stored with the health insurance company, so you don’t have to submit a new photo,” says… Read More

Fraud in the apartment search

A nice apartment for little rent? That could be fraud, says the Baden-Württemberg State Office of Criminal Investigation (LKA). Criminals are always coming up with new tricks to get their victims’ money. One way is to offer apartments on the Internet and demand a lot of money from prospective tenants in advance. If an alleged landlord demands money even before viewing the apartment, people looking for an apartment should be alarmed. Often the accounts are abroad and nobody turns up to hand over the keys. According to the LKA, the crooks mainly use internet platforms. At first glance, the advertisements… Read More

Where St Nicholas puts presents under the pillow

In Germany, St Nicholas’ main task is to fill boots: Children place boots in front of the door on the night of 6 December and hope that St Nicholas will leave them with sweets and small gifts overnight. However, for some families he only arrives on the evening of St Nicholas’ Day itself: he wears a red coat, a beard and a red hat and hands over the presents personally or reminds children to work harder at school, for example. The rod with which he—or his companion Knecht Ruprecht—threatened previous generations remains outside the door. Christian churches commemorate the anniversary… Read More

More and more refugees have jobs—including as skilled workers

The situation for refugees on the German labor market has changed significantly between 2016 and 2020. 55 percent of refugee men had a job in 2020. Four years earlier, it was only 16 percent. The employees initially started with an unskilled job. However, by 2020, a third of 18- to 65-year-old men had become skilled workers (with several years of training or a comparable qualification). These were the findings of a study by the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) and the University of Bamberg. The proportion of refugee women in employment also increased—from 6 percent in 2016 to 17… Read More

Customs in the Advent season

The Advent season in Germany has many traditions and customs. Advent means “the coming of God”, referring to the birth of Jesus Christ, which many people in Germany celebrate on December 24th. Advent begins on the first Sunday after November 26th and is then celebrated on all four Sundays until Christmas. The celebrations have many customs. One of them is the Advent wreath, a beautifully decorated wreath made of fir branches with four candles on it. One candle is lit every Sunday, so that all four candles are lit by Christmas. Another custom, especially for children, is the Advent calendar,… Read More

Jobcenter supports coaching

If the conditions are right, the job centre supports migrants who would like to take advantage of professional coaching. The job centre then provides a so-called “activation and placement voucher” and covers the costs for the “Migration and the labour market” coaching, for example. This is organised by private providers. The individual advisor at the job centre knows which conditions must be met for the activation and placement voucher. However, the job centre points out on its website that there is no legal entitlement to the voucher. The coaching programme is intended to provide help with professional development. Depending on… Read More

Temporary protection for Ukrainians in Germany extended

The residence permit for refugees from Ukraine will be automatically extended until 4 March 2025, according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The prerequisite for this is that the current individual residence permit is still valid on 1 February of next year. Refugees from Ukraine therefore do not have to apply for an extension of their protection status.  The regulation is called the Ukraine Residence Permit Continued Validity Regulation. The EU interior ministers had already laid down the basic principles in October. The so-called mass influx directive applies to refugees from Ukraine in Europe. War refugees are granted a… Read More

For example, temporary workers have been paid at least 13 euros per hour since April… Read More

Offers for families with little money

There are many offers of help for families in Tübingen who don’t have much money. However, not all the support services are well known. A 20-page brochure from the city of Tübingen aims to change this. It is a guide – with addresses, telephone numbers and opening hours – to help and services from babyhood to adulthood. The brochure is available online or in print, for example from advice centers, Tübingen town hall or the social services department in Derendinger Straße.
