Every degree less saves energy costs

Energy prices have been rising rapidly since 2021. With the war in Ukraine, the cost of electricity, heating and gasoline shot up again and continues to reach new highs.
What can families and individuals do to reduce energy consumption and thus costs? The consumer center has tips. These tips are in a brochure that is also available in English, Arabic and Dari. The booklet explains how to heat properly, i.e. economically, how to ventilate the home properly, how to save energy when doing laundry, cooking and baking, washing dishes, and when working and playing with computers and the like. These tips are worthwhile. They help to reduce energy costs.
Here are a few examples: Every degree less in the home counts when it comes to heating costs. Laundry doesn’t always have to be washed at 60 degrees. Lightly soiled textiles can be washed at 30 degrees. Lower temperatures and eco programs can also save money on the dishwasher. The refrigerator is cold enough when the top compartment is 7 degrees – except for fresh minced meat, which has to be much colder.
LED lamps use less electricity than halogen lamps or old light bulbs. Power consumption can be reduced if unused electrical appliances are switched off completely or disconnected from the power supply. A tablet is sufficient for surfing the web. It consumes less power than a laptop or desktop computer.
Fuel can also be saved when driving. According to the German Automobile Association (ADAC), a car that is driven in an anticipatory and steady manner – i.e., without accelerating hard and then braking hard again – can consume up to 20 percent less fuel.
In addition, the consumer advice center offers free advice on simple questions about energy. Experts can be reached at the toll-free number 0800 809 802 400 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays.
