Why foreign skilled workers often leave Germany again

A recently published study by the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IAW) in Tübingen and the SOKO Institute in Bielefeld sheds light on the increasing exodus of foreign skilled workers from Germany. Based on an extensive online survey and interviews, the reasons why international skilled workers leave Germany are examined.
A key finding is the diversity of migration motives. While some skilled workers originally came to Germany for professional reasons, other factors often play a role in the decision to leave the country again. Difficulties with integration, experiences of discrimination and challenges in the professional environment are particularly emphasized. In addition, residence law problems are identified as another driving factor for emigration.
The situation of skilled workers after their return or onward migration is also interesting: many report that they were happier in Germany, for example because of the better salary or better employee rights. Two thirds of people who have left Germany would like to return there.
The study also offers concrete recommendations for action. These include improving language acquisition, transparency about working conditions and possible career opportunities, as well as more intensive advice. The options for a possible return should also be made more transparent.
A more comprehensive main study is to build on these initial results, which promises to provide further insights into this important topic. It is clear that Germany still needs to take action when it comes to integrating and retaining foreign skilled workers. Only by understanding the complex reasons that lead to emigration can effective strategies be developed to keep highly qualified international talent in the country.
