Medication now on e-prescription

The old pink prescription from the doctor’s surgery has had its day: at the beginning of the new year, it will be replaced by the e-prescription. People with statutory health insurance can then simply go to the nearest pharmacy with their insurance card and pick up the medication prescribed by their doctor. The co-payment rules will not change. The e-prescription can also be redeemed in online pharmacies. Further information can be found on the homepage of the Federal Ministry of Health:

In the doctor’s surgery, e-prescriptions are created digitally, signed and stored on a central system. At the pharmacy, patients then only need to insert their electronic health card into the terminal. A PIN is not required. However, there is also the option of having the e-prescription printed out or saving it on the e-prescription app. At the moment, the e-prescription is only valid for prescription-only medicines. As the e-prescription can only be redeemed once, it is considered tamper-proof. Unredeemed prescriptions are automatically deleted ten days after they expire. They are valid for 28 days.
For patients who take the same medication over a long period of time, the e-prescription has the advantage that they do not have to visit the doctor’s surgery again within a quarter to pick up a follow-up prescription. They can order this over the phone or by e-mail. Doctors can also issue e-prescriptions after video consultations. However, patients must still have their health insurance card scanned at the beginning of each quarter. According to the Ministry of Health, there is another advantage of the e-prescription: the risk of side effects can be assessed more easily because all prescribed medication is noted.
