Cannabis legal for adults

Adults have been allowed to smoke weed in Germany since 1 April—if they comply with certain rules. The Bundestag and Bundesrat have decided that the possession of 25 grams of dried cannabis is permitted in public. At home, anyone over the age of 18 may even possess 50 grams. Smoking is also permitted in public, but not within 100 metres of schools, daycare centres, youth centres or sports facilities. Smoking pot is also prohibited in pedestrianised areas between 7am and 8pm. Young people are still not allowed to smoke or possess marijuana or cannabis. Dealing also remains prohibited. Anyone who sells substances to young people will face a prison sentence of up to two years. According to Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR), hashish biscuits and the like are also prohibited.
Adults are now also allowed to grow their own marijuana plants: Specifically, each adult may possess a maximum of three female plants. However, leaves and flowers may not be passed on or sold. Seeds may also be purchased online in EU member states. However, cultivation is only permitted for those who have been living in Germany for six months. The establishment of “Cannabis Social Clubs” for cultivation and distribution among members has been postponed until June.
Until a new limit is set, driving while high will remain illegal. Until now, driving while stoned has been punishable by a fine, a driving ban or even the withdrawal of a driving licence. According to the Federal Ministry of Health, a group of experts is currently working on setting a limit value.
